Native chickens in Taiwan have blue or black shank and tightly fitted feather covering. They are descendants of Chinese, Japanese, American and possible some European breeds. Due to the demand for chicken suited to the traditional cooking, half of the meat-type chickens consumed in Taiwan utilize native genome. The locally developed slow-growth chickens for commercial production, so-called as Taiwan Country chicken, have a large comb and heavy fleshy legs. Growth performance of Taiwan Country Chicken has been greatly improved in the past two decades, but their frame size increased and reproduction deteriorated. Studies show that compared with the commercial broiler and White Leghorn, the native chicken have better resistance against heat stress and many diseases, and their eggs and meat possess better eating qualities. Researches on the genetics, breeding, nutrition, management and health of native chickens in Taiwan have been conducted for decades for the utilization of the genetic materials.
