This study investigated the pattern of in vitro development of chick and quail embryos cultured in surrogate egg-shells and in vitro culture system of chick and quail embryos to provide opportunities for genetic manipulation of fowl and the self-developmental pattern of chick blastoderm cells in the quail subgerminal cavity. From the result of this study, the surrogate egg-shell culture system indicated that it should be effectively applicable for the production of transgenic birds by primordial germ cell or blastoderm cell transfer and DNA microinjection. And also, this surrogate egg-shell culture system will be useful for the production of fowl chimera. After the blastoderm cells of chicken embryos were injected into subgerminal cavity of quail embryos, the chromosomal analysis showed that blastoderm cell division of chicken embryos for self-development was extremely rare.
