This study was carried out to clarify a role of cecum in protein nutrition of the chicken.
It was examined in this experiment whether the inhibition of entry into the ceca of urine from the cloaca and of digesta escaped from the absorption at the upper intestine by ligation or cecectomy affects nitrogen utilization and excretion.
1. Effects of ligation of ceca on nitrogen utilization and excretion were investigated in chickens fed 5%, 10% or 14% protein diet, urea-added 5% and 10% protein diets, and 14% protein practical diet. Irrespective of dietary protein level and urea addition, the ligation of ceca decreased uric acid excretion and tended to increase nitrogen utilization with the exception of urea-added 10% protein diet.
2. Effects of ligation of ceca on nitrogen utilization and excretion were investigated in conventional and colostomized chickens fed 5% protein diet or urea-added 5% protein diet. Total nitrogen excretion and uric acid excretion were increased by colostomy and the increase was depressed by ligation of ceca in chickens fed 5% protein diet or urea-added 5% protein diet. Therefore, nitrogen utilization and balance were decreased by colostomy and the decrease was reduced by ligation of ceca.
3. In order to examine effects of ligation of ceca on microbial activity, microbes were counted and products of microbial fermentation were determined. The ligation of ceca decreased microbial count, concentrations of acetic, propionic and butyric acids and ammonia, and washing of ceca with saline and antibiotics accentuated these changes. There was a highly inverse relative correlation between microbial count and uric acid excretion.
4. Since a few microbes and a little microbial fermentation products were detected in the ligated ceca, detaching of ceca was adopted to exclude metabolic effects of this fermentation. Cecetomy increased nitrogen utilization (balance) and decreased uric acid excretion in chickens fed a 5% protein diet and urea-added 5% protein diet, being in good agreement with the results obtained in ceca-ligated chickens.
These results suggest that ceca have a negative effect in nitrogen nutrition in the chicken regardless of having a significant recovery of urinary nitrogen through ceca.
