This paper aims to explain the addressee-honorifics in Hangeul letters from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth century and show which levels the speaker uses toward the hearer in kin relationship.
The addressee-honorific system in Hangeul letters is simpler than that shown in published books. There are only three levels, the polite level ‘ha-na-i-da’, the middle level ‘ha-na-y’ and the plain level ‘ha-na-da’. In the case that there is a sharp distinction in the distance of kin relationship between the speaker and the hearer, the senior uses the plain level ‘ha-na-da’ and the junior uses the polite level ‘ha-na-i-da’ in general. For example, parents used the plain level toward their sons or daughters and sons and daughters used the polite level toward their parents. On the other hand, when the speaker and the hearer have somewhat equal-status in kin relationship such as siblings or husband and wife, the senior uses the middle level ‘ha-na-y’ and the junior uses the polite level or even can use the middle level. Similarly, when the speaker and the hearer are related by marriage and are opposite in gender, the speaker in high status cannot treat the hearer just as lower-status person but regards her/him as equal-status person by using the middle level ‘ha-na-y'.
In kin relationship, the distance of kin relationship is a major factor which classifies into the senior and the junior, and the age is just a secondary factor. It is also very important factor whether the speaker and the hearer have the blood relationship or relation by marriage and they have same gender or not. When the speaker and the hearer are related by marriage and are different in gender, the speaker in high status inclines to use the middle level or even the polite level toward the hearer in low status. It might be due to lack of intimacy.
