The goal of the current study was to evaluate the validity of various insolation models used to calculate both global and diffuse solar radiation incident on a horizontal surface and the global solar radiation incident on a surface tilted toward the equator for the city of Tripoli, Libya. Data sets of half-hourly measured insolation values were obtained over a 3-year period(1993-1995) using pyranometers which received diffuse and global solar radiation in a horizontal position and global radiation on surfaces tilted toward the equator at 32˚ angle above the horizontal. Data from the horizontal surface was also used to predict insolation on a tilted surface. The chosen correlations were further modified, to increase their accuracy, and a good agreement was obtained between the calculated values and the measured ones. It was found that the Dogniaux-Lemoin, and Page correlations are the best to predict the global and the diffuse radiation incident on a horizontal surface respectively. Furthermore, the HDKR is the best model to predict the global radiation incident on a tilted surface in Tripoli. Monthly and yearly optimum tilt angles were extensively studied for the city.
