A battery control unit (BCD) is a device that controls the charge of battery. It protects the battery from early destruction due to overcharge and deep overcharge states of battery. Twenty-one ANECs funded by DOE and other entities installed a lot of PV BCS at off-grid rural areas and other applications in the Philippines, where BCD is an indispensable component. Most BCDs are imported which cost ranges from DS$121 to 165 (PhP6,800 to 9,250). Thus, this study was conducted to design an alternative battery control unit for a battery charging station using locally available materials and to compare improved-design BCD against imported one, and to promote and commercialize BCD to potential users
The improved-design modification process went through an evolutionary process from the onloff charge controller test circuits to the final circuit arrangement which features the Pulse Charging Algorithm that eventually produced the best performance. The controller design required the following: simplicity of installation, low cost for easier adoption and the use of locally available electronic components for fabrication to be assured of supply of spare parts. The final alternative BCD with features a pulse charging algorithm to prevent overcharging of battery and it optimize charging capacity. The estimated cost of the alternative BCD using local materials was DS$26 (Phpl,433).
T-test showed no significant differences on charging current (lolls) ratio between the alternative and imported BCD. The improved-design alternative, locally made BCD is seven times cheaper than imported ones. It is comparable to, if not better than imported ones. Moreover, the manufacturing BCD locally reduces the cost of operation mainly because the materials are readily available. Reliability testing is underway by the MMSU ANEC of the alternative BCD at the barangay electrification program using PV BCS, before wide commercialization.
