It is anticipated that the energy consumption in the 21st century is rapidly increased with an explosive population as well as the leveling-up of our living conditions to the higher level. Since an increase in energy consumption will result in a serious situation for the survival of our mankind, it is urgently necessary for us to improve the present energy systems and protect our beautiful terrestrial environments. To guarantee the energy security, it is required that the sustainable energy system should be established for the future.
For this goal, we had proposed "Establishment of Center of Excellence (COE) on Sustainable Energy System" for the 21st century COE program, and our proposal was accepted in 2002 by the Japanese government. The research program in our proposal consists of four main tasks, solar energy, hydrogen energy, bioenergy and evaluation of total energy system to achieve sustainable energy system, aiming at the establishment of environmentally-friendly society. In this paper, current progress in bioenergy research in this program is introduced on sustainable energy system.
