The aim of this project is to build a solar collection system for the purpose of evenly distributing natural sunlight in an indoor environment using light pipe technology. The goal of the current work is to lower cost and mechanical complexity of the previous system, while at the same time raising efficiencies. The original version of the solar collection system consisted of a large Fresnel lens and a light transformer. This method proved to be inefficient and involved complicated mechanical movements. Furthermore, it did not provide an even amount of light from the light pipe. The new design consists of Venetian style blinds and a cone shaped light transformer.
The blinds are used to correct the sun's altitude and azimuth movements throughout the day. This allows the rest of the system to be stationary. Behind both sets of blinds is the light transformer, which is based on a parabolic shaped light concentrator. The light transformer was designed to efficiently output light within a 30 degree radial spread so the light pipe could total internally reflect the light. This system was designed to have two light transformers output into a single light pipe. A second version of the light transformer was designed to incorporate con-focal cylindrical lenses to allow a larger input aperture area and increase the output lumens.
One quarter scale models were made of the new system, and both light transformers with blinds had a maximum efficiency greater than fifty percent. This allowed 24,000 to 30,000 lumens to be input into a single light pipe. The results of the scale model tests look encouraging and the efficiencies are higher than the previous system. Furthermore, this new system is very cost effective making the new blind and light transformer superior to the previous versions. Testing in real world situations with the actual sun and life size light pipes, blinds, and light transformers will be performed in the next few months.
