Korean Government has been promoting Rural Electrification Project in order to supply the electric power up to the utility levels by a diesel generator for the remote islands with more than 50 households since 1988. However in a small island with Jess than 50 households, a diesel generator or a PV system that was built for the electric power system for less than 8 hours a day usage only.
In this paper, we had done a survey for the status of the electrification and their usages since the Rural Electrification Project was granted. Several PV-diesel hybrid systems were built in isolated islands in Korea, where they are far from the inland to be supplied the electric power to a utility level from it. A lot of efforts has been concentrated to find a cost-effective electric supply system with higher reliability and minimum maintenance when compared with a diesel generator.
