This paper deals with Chinese and Korean myths related to shamanism, and investigates the type and thought of shamanic myths of two countries from the comparative perspective.
First, I attempt to review the general aspects concerning shaman and shamanism, and also search for related mythic materials as well as the peculiarity of shamanism of China and Korea. Next, I try to further study such themes as shamanic world trees, mountains, animals, rebirth motif and cosmology.
In conclusion, I assume that shamanic myths of China and Korea have some characteristics as follows: The world tree as a cosmic pole and mountain function as a medium to connect heaven and earth, and symbolize fertility. The animals with shamans play an important role in helping shaman to take a trip to heaven. Moreover, the rebirth motif reveals the primitive men's idea of eternal life. We also find multi complex of cosmos through the examination of shamanic cosmology.
Lastly, we can confirm that Chinese myths in connection with shamanism mostly belong to the myth of Dong-Yi tribe which is one of minor groups, not Han tribe which is a major group in China.
