The application of carbon fibre mesh(CFM) as strengthening element is ideally suited for use in damaged girders exposed to deicing salts or harsh marine environment. Because the extend of the steel corrosion and the resulting concrete degradation depend on the environment and the type of the structure and the corrosion effect is more pronounced in harsh marine environments and for structures exposed to decing agent. The paper presents studies of the long-term behavior of the beams strengthened in flexure with CFM under sustained loading. In this experimental program, four beams were tested in long-term bending to evaluate flexural strengthening effectiveness of the CFM. The beams were designed with span of 2000㎜ and rectangular cross-section of 300㎜ width and 200㎜ depth. The beams were simply supported and subjected to two pointed sustained loading. The beams were instrumented and monitored to observe the changes in the behavior due to creep and shrinkage of concrete. Observations were recorded regularly for nearly four months. Results of the experimental study indicate that carbon fiber mesh can be efficiently used to strengthen or to repair reinforced concrete beams in long-term bending behavior. An analytical method is devesloped to predict the long-term behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened in flexure with CFM. The calculated deflections, strains and curvatures compare reasonably with the experimental values.
