The goal of this paper is to present a session management based on a model of workgroups in open environments. Open environment means systems that do not reflect fixed organizational structures because they allow users access resources, such as e.g. the Internet. In this paper, we suggest that workgroups are an essential concept to open environments, like collaboratory, because this concept offers a method to group users and form a relationship between them efficiently. Also, the concept of workgroups enables us to offer different levels of information sharing by defining the types of session objects and the roles of users. The type of a session object can be private, shared, or public. The roles of users, defined by the concept of workgroups, are chief and member. And the additional roles, creator and othergroup, can be created by the session objects. Then, we define the model of workgroups, describe the characteristics of session objects, and present the session management considering the workgroups of users, the types of session objects, and the various roles. We introduce TeleB collaboratory system as an implementation example for the model of workgroups.
