During the Great Han Empire Period, Nam Goong Uk engaged in a variety of activities as an official, journalist, and educator; and later he participated in national movements including diffusion of the national flower of Korea(the rose of Sharon) during the Japanese Colonial Period. For the reasons, he had to be imprisoned several times. His life has been brought many scholars' attention, obtaining positive evaluations with regrading him as one of the most active leaders for enlightenment and independence of the age.
Researchers, however, have deemed Nam just as a man in the progressives, reformer, or torchbearer, overlooking that he was a monarchist who longed for the restoration of imperial royal rulethe. His book “Korea-Story” empathized “loyalty to the king”; and this proves his political orientation as a monarchist. Although monarchy itself is not a bad system, it is noticeable that he had never changed his belief as a monarchist even after the 3ㆍ1 Independence Movement.
Nam has been criticized for the reason that he maintained a dubious attitude despite his position as a representative negotiator with the government while he was working for the Independence Club. He did not decline offers for a government post although he was being involved in antigovernment activities then. However, he never retained a lingering desire for the government position after was abdicated by the Japanese Empire.
He continued his activities for the nation, such as educating people to inspire patriotism and developing the diffusion movement of Korea's national flower during the Japanese Colonial Period. Nevertheless, he held a twofold belief that independence from the Japanese Empire would be impossible while he was eager for it. This might cause some negative evaluations on him; however, it is commendable for him not to give up his hope and activities for the independence in a desperate situation at that time.
