The contribution of port industry to Korean economy is estimated in this paper. The main results are as follow. i) Total output of port industry in its own sector is found to be 2,288.5 billion won and derived output in other sectors to be 1820.8 billion won, amounting to 4,179.3 billion won(0.5% of national output including intermediate products) in total in 1995, ii) direct and indirect total value-added-output of the sector to be 2,115.6 billon won(1,366.0 billion won in its own sector and 749.5billion won in derived sectors) forming 0.6% of GDP, iii) direct and indirect total employment in the sector to be 72,500 workers(47,900 workers in its own sector and 24,600 workers in derived sectors) forming 0.4% of national employment.
However the importance of it cannot be properly estimated by quantitative amount of production, employment etc. Port industry is one of important key industries in national economy. It' is imperative in national and international logistics enabling various economic activities to continue.
