A simulation model of variable speed wind turbine simulation model based on PSCAD/EMTDC is developed. The model consists of a wind model, rotor dynamics, a generator, power converters, a transformer, distribution lines and voltage source. Not only the topology but also control algorithms are implemented for power converter simulation. Also the simulation speed increased using dc-link power balance relationship. Several transient case studies are performed including wind speed change, local load change and grid-side voltage unbalance using developed simulation model. Developed simulation model can be utilized for the study of actual interaction between wind turbine and grid for a reliable operation and protection of the power system.
