This article has analyzed the problem of modernity and the possibility of coexistence of civilizations with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States as a momentum. The horrendous attack against the world's sole superpower has had a great impact on the international order in the 21st century, and is helping to shape the post-Cold Wat eta. With its fotmidable human and material loss, this tragic incident reminded us to think about the clash and coexistence of civilizations. A careful examination was needed to determine whether these large-scale terrorist acts could be considered as the clash of civilizations. In other words, the clash of civilizations was considered to be a mechanism of conflict in the new era. However, this study aims to explore the mechanism of conflict from the angle of modernity and post modernity instead of the viewpoint of civilization. For this, the article focuses on Zygmunt Bawnants postmodern theory, providing an appropriate theoretical constitution. Modernity is different from postmodernity in a sense of system of control. Modernity is characterized by a multi-leveled system of control which includes law, disciplinary strategies, and ideological cont개l. It's control is for order and against all chaos. The modern mind set was driven by a quest for necessity, certainty, order, universality and totality. But modernity actually had chaos, ambiguity, ambivalence, difference, and uncertainty. Therefore, modernity had some problems behind its back. The method of control in modernity was universal ethics which could not wipe out all chaos. The situation has changed. The post-Cold war era, the collapse of communism and the growing crisis of modern risk society require a new method of control which can cover all conflicts. It was postmodern ethics based on individual morality applying for postmodern society.
Postmodernity is said to embrace plurality, ambiguity, ambivalence, uncertainty, the contingent and transitory. Accordingly the circumstances of postmodernity have a possibility of coexistence of civilizations. Because of this, the new world conflict should be focused not on the clash of civilizations but on the chaos of modernity. Therefore the coexistence of civilizations may result from the conquest of modernity.
