This paper deals with dr understanding tradition and modernity in post-war poetry of North Korea. I focus on how the principle modernity has been expansively reproduced since dr early stage of North korean literature. I also attempt to show that the principle modernity played an important role in establishing Ju-he literary thecory in North Korea..
How to define 'tradition' in literature depends on the very descendants, who reconstruct the meaning to their tradition according to their specific value system and cultural tendencies. In this sense, the tradition in literary history always means the 'invented' one.
Post-war poetry in North Korea, specifically after the 1960's, tradition was regarded as the principle of literary system which expressed the modern project of enlightenment, that is to establish socialism, and represented the socialist ideology. North Korean poetry in the 1950's were characterized by the discourse of 'class' instead of that of nation or of tradition without much interest in 'the traditional' because they maintained the frame of orthodox Marxism. However, from Chun-ri-ma period to Ju-che literary stage, 'the traditional' became more and more important elements in poetry of North Korea.
Returning to the discourse of tradition or of nation was closely connected with the strategy the goal of which was to urge people to participate in Chun-ri-ma movement. Even though this tendency was seemingly related to the principle of social realism, there was a serious problem, which was the obsession with 'ours' and the possibility of its involvement in preservative nationalism. 'The traditional' in North Korean poetry after the stage of Ju-che literary theory, specifically since the 1960's, has been very limited. It is no more than artificially constructed tradition.
