In discussing the nature and the specificity of modem Korean Literature, one cannot rule our the Japanese Colonialism in Korea. The Japanese Colonial rule enforced many destitute Koreans to experience a border-crossing. When they were not even allowed to continue their existence in front of the threat of extreme poverty Japanese Colonial rule inflicted on them, Koreans made migrations to Man-Om area in search for a new world where they believed they would never starve again if only they worked hard enough. Korean Ahn Su-Kil is a novelist who devoted most of his novels to describing the desperate experiences of the Korean people who c~ the Korean border to Man-Chu: how Koreans responded when they were asked to survive by serving indigenous Chinese as their virtual slaves, how they struggled to preserve their own culture against the conflict with the Chinese counter-parr, and how they continued to define and redefine their identity and strove to procure their autonomy.
This paper examines novels by Ahn Su-Kil focusing on Korean people's experiences in a new world of Buk-Kan-Do with the intention that, in so doing, we would be able to remember the almost forgotten past-- the past in which many Korean people crossed the northern Korean border to a Chinese territory as a way of escaping from starvation. As a literary critic Homi Bhabha puts it, "re-membering, purring together the dismembered past" is "to make sense of the trauma of the present." In that sense, to read and interpret the forgotten history of Korean diaspora would enable us not only to recuperate the past, but to illuminate our present. Therefore, the importance of the interstices and the hybrid identities found in Ahn's texts should not be overlooked.
This paper concludes that Koreans had to lead as hard lives as they had in homeland. However, although their blue print for the new world faded away in the course of their struggle for survival, their experiences were still precious ones. That is they carne to be able to bridge the home and the world while they had residency in borderland. To be unhomed was not to be homeless as Bhabha suggested. Their in-between identity and experiences provide Korean literature with rare and precious motifs of 'unhomed beings', which could be fruitfully extended to the theme of world literature.
