Wesley laid the foundation for modem women's liberation through his Methodist Movement. in fact, Methodist women in the revival movement escaped from the patriarchal system of old customs, and they were leaders in communities, participating in various public services like establishing orphanages, schools, and other charitable works. Wesley accepted the notion that women were given the same amount of spiritual ability as men and that they possessed charismatic talent as well. At the same time, women's special religious experiences and their successful pastoral duties made it possible for the appearance of an official woman preacher at the Manchester Methodist Conference in 1787.
The cause of women leader's vigorous activities in the Methodist revivalist movement can be summed up as follows. First, Wesley's goal was to change individuals and society by means of personal religious experience and its power. The urgent situation at that time called for women with talents in special vocations to reform the church from within. Wesley's practical and talent-oriented charismatic church gave full support to official women preachers in the Methodist Church. Secondly, the Methodist Church gave a unique environment to women called to pastoral duties to work in a full capacity. Wesley also considered women to take the meaning of grace freely in church as males could, and valued women's religious experiences and gifts of the spirt very highly. Consequently, these women played important roles in developing societies, leading the bands and classes as visitors who visited backsliders and prisoners, and as school leaders and circuit preachers, and started to bring about numerous converts.
In other words, the female leaders in the Methodist movement were not only godly, full of the Holy Spirit, but also admired as models for Christian perfection by devoting their lives to helping other people. These women in the early Methodist movement played a crucial role in expanding the movement to a revival in evangelism. Due to their voluntary devotion and success, the Methodist movement caused a revolution in social sanctification from the very base of British churches and society.
The excellent achievement of women in the Methodist movement had tremendous influence on the women of the North American Methodist Church. In particular, in the middle of the 19th century, they took an active role in enacting laws for female ministry through activities in helping the Holiness movement, the Salvation Army, the Church of the Nazarene, the Pentecostal movement and others.
