This study was conducted on traditional quilted clothes in Korea on the basis of the related Literature and relics.
Quilting can trace its origin back to 'apeui' a kind of monk's robe, having been developed up to date as a robe for protection against cold in order to adapt oneself to cold.
Quilting is divided into a dense quilting, a moderate quilting, and a sparse quilting, and then according to the form of quilting into a concave quilting and a flat quilting.
Quilting was carried out by putting cotton in between a cotton fabric and a silk fabric, principally by means of broad-stitching at times using a push stick in order to keep the fabrics from being pulled out.
As the thread used for quilting was very long, quilted clothes were symbolized to be representative longevity, thus having been highly valued in life.
Recently, ornamentation was added to the practical functions of quilting, which led to varied expressions, even to sundry fashion goods besides dress and its ornaments by handicraft techniques A matter of consequence here is to appreciate anew the signification of traditional quilting in the flow of the modernism and then to create new traditions in which modern images can be expressed.
Therefore, it is expected that the value of traditional quilting in Korea would be handed down in a correct way and as a result able to be distinctively brilliant as a part of great modern handicrafts in this internationalization age.
