This paper analyzes the interaction between culture and cyberspace in the information age, particularly among Internet addicts, for the purpose of improving Korean Onistian education.
Internet addiction is defined as the excessive use of the Internet, causing emotional and/or physical pain and disruption to occupational, academic, social, family-related, financial, psychological, or physiological functioning.
The psychological features of cyberspace are categorized as facilitators and attractiveness. These include reduced sensations, identity flexibility, equalized status, transcended space, temporal flexibility, social multiplicity, and recordability. The facilitators enhance the disinhibition effect.
Negatively, one may act out of unsavory needs and wishes through exerting rude language, harsh criticism, or threat, or explore web sites of pornography and violence. Positively, one may share one's hidden emotions, fears, or wishes with others on the Internet. The attractiveness is altered perception, which is most associated with Internet addiction. Generally, the psychological features are considered to intensify and accelerate among those with vulnerability to Internet addiction.
Culture is analyzed further in terms of complexity, tightness, and individualism. Complexity refers to the degree of complexity in social structure and speed in social process and renovation. Tightness refers to the degree of tolerance. Individualism, or collectivism, refers to the status of the individual within the community in the culture.
Cyberspace promotes cultural complexity, looseness, and individualism. Those with cultural tightness are more vulnerable to entertainment-oriented activity and, thereafter, Internet addiction.
Three issues are presented for Christian education in Korea, where information networks have expanded rapidly, but universal and collective traditions remain. First, cultural transformation towards individualism advocated in cyberspace is a necessary presupposition in the structure and process of Christian education. Second, it is important to enhance a teacher's empathic, supportive, and caring attitude. Finally, it is necessary to facilitate parents' education to learn how to respect their children as well as how to surf on the internet.
