This study looks at the documents and actual practices concerning the ceremonial costumes of the Soowoon sect to find out what characteristics they have In terms of the names. structures, designs, and colors, and see what religious ideas they convey, and I reached the following conclusions.
1. Most Soowoon sects have ceremonial costumes, and they are called CeremonY-Robe, Religion-Robe, Zen-Robe. The headpieces are called Jungja-gwan (shaped like the headpiece of a Chosun nobleman). You-gun (shaped like the headpiece of a Confucian scholar), Sun-gwan ("Zen-headpiece"), Yunhwa-gwan (shaped like a lotus flower). and Samchung-gwan ("three-tiered headpiece"). Soowoon is the only sect that allows women to wear a headpiece.
2. The basic outfit for most sects is hanbok. I. e. the traditonal Korean costume. Men add a robe and a headpiece to this, but it is the only costume for most women.
3. The hanbok worn by men and women in Soowoon sect Is the basic traditional type, and men wear a vest. a robe with a side slit. or a robe without a slit with wide sleeves. straight lapel. or a robe with narrow sleeves. straight lapel. or a robe with a slit down the back. an additional layer of fabric In the back over it. whereas only two sects allow women to wear a robe with narrow sleeves and round lapel or a robe with wide sleeves, a slit. and a straight lapel) over hanbok. Men wear various headpieces inlcudlng Yunhwa-gwan (shaped like a lotus flower). Jungja-gwan (shaped like the headpiece of a Chosun nobleman). You-gun (shaped like the headpiece of a Confucian scholar). in the order of frequency. Soowoon Is the only sect where women wear Yunhwa-gwan (shaped like a lotus flower).
4. The color of most Soowoon costumes is yellow for men. white for women. but the colors of yin and yang and the Five Elements and various compound colors are also used.
5. The main Ideas reflected in the physical characteristics of the ceremonial costumes of Soowoon sects include the oneness of the Confucianism. Buddhism, and Zen Buddhism, the Chundo Idea that identifies men and the supreme being. and yin and yang and the Five Elements.
