The high-use living style is one of the symbols of city-life pattern in our modern society Living style in Seoul has been changed rapidly from low-rise to high-rise during the last several decades of industrialization with national issues for economy and other social changes with globalization and rapid westernizaiton in life style The Seoul has experienced serious housing problems with excessive rural-to-urban migration It quantitatively resulted rapid housing demands in limited land resources and inevitably resulted multi-story residence development. This habitat called apartment has become typical living quarter of city life based on modern society with globalization and westernization This pattern seems to be a way to solve the quantitative problem, but it brought another problem such as uniform visual environment with similar building height and form Turning into the 21st century, such a mechanism becomes no longer effective and there are demands for the diversification of residential style and amenity of urban housing. The high-rise residence has been lead with residential complex and height competitions in Seoul.
This paper has focused on the comparative analysis of residential developments to obtain architectural design characteristics of high-rise residential patterns in relation to the user's evaluation for developing the adequacy of living quality It will be chance to understand developed design patterns of multi-story residential buildings with the changes of the times in Seoul
