The modern history of Japan as a discipline was formed under the strong influence of the modern European writings of history. A representative tendency of the latter can be found in both civilization and fact-finding history which had belief in the progress of history and the development of civilization.
On the one hand, the Meiji Restoration pursed modernization and civilization. On the other hand, it was based on restorative political power system which found a clue of justifying Tenno emperor rule in ancient mythology. In this process Kokutai Sikan became dominant: the historical perspective of civilization was frustrated; the historical perspective of fact-finding became serve to the cause of Kokutai Sikan. The ancient history of Japan could not be exceptional.
The basic system of the Japanese ancient history which is still circulating was provided in Kohon Kokusigan. Especially, the colonialization of Korea, compilation of Rituryo, the ways of periodization after Nala era are still effectively functioning in this society.
More recently, there is vigorous tendency for historian to study and explain the Japanese ancient history as a reflection of modem Japan. As a result we have more chances to understand how modem historical writing distorted the Japanese ancient history, and how its artificial aspect manifested itself. However, there is a need to remind that the frame of explanation of the ancient history of Japan is not only the reflection of logic and thought of modem Japan but also the reflection of the way of thinking of the Japanese ruling class in ancient times.
