By 2019, Korea is expected to be an aged society, age group of 65 and older being over 14% of the total population,
considering their rapid increase today. This study was intended to find out the demands for the preferred housing environment of
the elderly through on-site survey. The survey was taken by trained survey takers from the people of ages 65 and older
residing in Daejeon city. Statistical analysis was implemented from 583 appropriate samples out of 624 surveys using [SPSS PC+
10.0]. The results are as follows. First, the elderly prefer suburban residence where there are convenient facilities such as silver
center and credible hospital. Second, the elderly hope, if they have their spouse, to live with them, if they don't have their
spouse, to live with their son's family. Third, the most popular housing prices of the people is a range of 50~150 million won.
(as of October 2002, price before rise due to the announcement of Administrative Capitol rearrangement) Fourth, the most popular
size of the housing area was 30~39 pyung. Fifth, the order of preference of convenient facilities in their residing area was
credible hospitals, parks and sidewalks, and silver center, respectively. Therefore it is considered that although the elderly prefer
the suburban outskirts of city as their residence, considering credible hospitals and distance from their sons living in urban area
for education or work, the environment they desire will have little difference from rural area, unless in the case of a big city as
Seoul. Thus, rural area with medical facilities and convenient transportation concludes to fit the residential area of the elderly.
Lower levels as first and second stories should be designed to be easily remodeled as the resident's aging proceeds, because
many elderly reside in apartments, and also because apartments are the mainstream residential structures provided. Also legal
and tax benefits should be provided on lease or rent to leasers and elderly tenants, so that the elderly can live among regular
families of varying age groups.
