The goal of this research is to establish the features of hotel lobby space through understanding of the space structure
and analyzing spatial configuration of in terms of guest and staff area. For the analysis of each space, we can use the
space syntax as a basic words system. It is more effective analyzing the space objectively and wholly rather than
explaining all the features of the spaces. This research is focused on the study of six hotels located in Seoul because the
six special hotels with more than 500 rooms are the good examples of abstracting the characteristics of architectural plans.
The analysis of the hotel lobby shows how to understand the whole space structures, characteristics and types of the
arranged space territory.
In my thesis, there are three main characteristics and types of space territory in the double structure of lobby space and
the connection of the space territory. Firstly, the hotel lobby space is divided by the circulation part and the main space
for the guests and staff. The lobby space is also functioned as a middle territory among public, private, and service areas.
Secondly, the characteristic of each space territory is summarized by the double structure of the lobby. It is classified into
the a public space and a private space showing the property of space. The double structure of the lobby shows the
characteristic of the middle territory between two spaces with the different characteristics, the middle territory is located
between specific spaces such as lobby, front and dining room. Thirdly, the connection of the space territory to guests is
designed for the easy access of hotel staff. In fact, it strictly divides the area between guest and staff by functioning as a
lobby. It is the double structure like the relationship of audience and actor in the ancient Rome play.
