The research is to analyze the text of apartment modelhouses to scrutinize the process of signification in architecture, based on
the 'desire theory'. According to Jacques Lacan (1901-1981), a French theorist and practitioner of psychoanalysis, unconsciousness is
not a congeries of biological instincts and drives, but rather a system of linguistic signifiers. He develops the fundamental Freudian
discovery of unconsciousness with structural-linguistics method and construes the processes of condensation and displacement as
instances of metaphor and metonymy, which implies that unconscious and desire can be analyzed in scientific methods. Lacan's
desire is expressed only in a form of 'absence' and a subject desires the other's desire.
Modelhouses are a unique building type, exhibiting the exact residential units, but without a direct reference to the exterior
design of the residential buildings. The textuality of the modelhouses is derived from their definition at the building code as a
temporary structure with enormous freedom from the various regulations. The study summarizes the modelhouses' modes of
expression as follows; exaggeration, geometry, im-materiality and decorative signs, which are contradictory to and absent in those
of the apartment buildings. This metonymic relationship is parallel to the Lacan's desire theory. The subject is desiring what is
absent, and the desire of the other; modelhouses are desiring what is absent in apartment buildings therefore the desire of
apartment buildings.
The research concludes that modelhouses are a symptomic signifier of apartments, being signified by its submerged desire of
absence.
