This study is to examine changes and features of protestant church buildings in Gwangju. For this, it examined Facade of 21 existing church buildings built before the Korean Liberation in Gwangju and analyzed architectural characteristics by periods.
In early period of missionary work, worship was conducted at missionary's house or existing Korean house, but as churches grew, they needed large space and traditional building didn't meet this demand and then mixed form of Korean and western building styles appeared. Eclectic buildings disappeared since 3ㆍ1 Independence Movement and they were changed into western style buildings. Since Korean Liberation, church buildings which were dull became active and forms of church buildings have been diversified and large~scaled owing to economic growth and technical development.
