LCD displays for flat monitors are backlit using Cold Cathode Fluorescent Larnps(CCFLs). The conventional CCFL ballast is two stage inverter composed of Buck converter and current-fed push-pull resonant oscillator.
This circuit has intrinsic limits of cost-competition and efficiency improvement compared with single stage inverter. In this paper, a new two-stage CCFL inverter proper to small input variation such as an adapter-powered system is proposed. This circuit has the schematic of replacing Buck converter in conventional two stage with linear regulator The attractiveness of this topology is primarily its simplicity, low cost, and acceptable efficiency. Design procedure and experimental comparison from 5W 15" LCD monitor backlight are presented.
