The purpose of this study is to develop the proper method for design of low-cost, non-fibers friction materials. To develop the low-cost friction materials, using of expensive fibers(e.g., aramid fiber, copper fiber, etc.) were excluded and the cheaper and easily, obtainable ceramic materials were used as basic components. To avoid the trial and error method which is generally used to design friction materials, the Taguchi method was employed to analyze the testing results. By adapting the Taguchi method, it is easy to investigate the influence of each component in complicated composite friction materials. After analyzing the testing results by the Taguchi method, the best conditioned formulation was obtained. To estimate the commercial application of the friction materials produced under this formulation, a full size dynamometer, a scale downed dynamometer, a real vehicle (Leganza, 2L SOHC type, Daewoo Motors) equipped with in-vehicle data aquisition system were used. Serveral important factors such as level of friction coefficient, wear rates, scoring of disc, speed spread, brake noise, etc. were measured. The results showed, that the level of friction coefficient was around 0.38, similar to the organic based friction materials and the wear rate was improved about 40% compared to commercialized non-steel based friction materials. The scoring of the disc was severe(20% more compared to the commercial friction .materials) and also noise was produced in the level of rating point 6( rating point 7 is acceptable). The further study is needed to improve the scoring and noise problems.
