Customer satisfaction with the quality of vehicle operation and per formance is affected by both the hardware and the fuels and lubricants used in the vehicle. Fuel and lubricant quality can also impact on emission control and fuel economy. Thus, it is necessary that the petroleum and additive industries play a major role in meeting the above needs by ensuring that commercial fuel and lubricant quality is maintained and improved where necessary.
The primary quality issues requiring attention include: for gasoline -volatility, alcohol-gasoline blends, deposit control; for diesel fuel - cetane quality, additives to reduce particulate emissions and improve low-temperature performance; for engine oils - viscosity, reduced phosphorus content, energy conserving properties, high temperature oxidation stability.
