The reasons why the education of Korean history major has become a crisis, is that the interest in Humanities has decreased, and the attractiveness of history as well. In addition, Undeclared Major System (Hakbuje) has caused the decline of Humanities. The shortage of professors and the unpractical courses of the Department of History are the internal factors of the decline. However, the absence of general association for history has proven to be inefficient in solving these problems. Also, attitudes of history professors focusing on research rather than education have become another cause of the crisis. Another reason is the discrimination of the women in the field with its hierarchical structure; with over half of the students being women, this factor has caused many students to become outsiders of the field.
There are still many universities that do not have a definite cause and goal to establish the Department of History. Many universities have divided classes into three groups and this has led Korean history to have less importance. Also, students cannot know what they will learn from the titles of classes. In realistic, there are many universities, which even run the same curriculum in 1950s. Also in many universities, the subject's deal with historical period is so much and it's very difficult to find classes on the recent issues in the society. On the other hand, some universities have developed various subjects including rural history, management of records, and management of cultural assets, women's history, multimedia history and so on.
In order to solve this problem, we should first change the goal to establish the Department of History from to train a historian to educate them as a people of culture based on historical knowledge. Also, medium and small size universities would form consortium group to educate the next generation and to open the interdisciplinary major. Besides, we should train students with informational technology skills to become the workers in professional sections such as manager of cultural assets, professional tour guide, manager of historical records, teachers who can describe our history and culture to foreigners. We should broaden the field of women's history and emphasize multimedia history. Furthermore, there should be a change of education policy such as improvement of current public examination policy and upgrade in the opportunity for students to become teachers.
