Electronics is the key technology today for many innovations in vehicle construction. In vehicle development, efficiency in quality, risk and cost management is an important precondition for successful and on-time projects, in addition to expertise in increasing complexity.

To operate current improvement to an increase of the value part in the car from electronics is about 35% until 2010. In the suction of this flow it is to observe a displacement of the development costs for electronics onto the software. Cost elements of up to 70% according to equipment level are already to be estimated for the software development today. To realize increasing demands concerning safety, economic impact, fuel consumption, comfort, and quality a coordinated and systematic development process will be introduced in this contribution. Based on functional and non-functional requirements an open and modular system architecture must be designed. This system architecture, as the basis for system design and implementation, supports aspects like re-use, exchangeability, scalability and distributed development Furthermore, a hierarchical decomposition of the system and the necessity to realize a system by using different technical and physical principles will be discussed.
