In this paper the problem of finding optimal control policies of manufacturing systems that have unreliable machines is considered. A production control strategy for flexible manufacturing system is presented. The extension of the work of Kimemia and Gershwin (1983) in which the system uncertainties are modeled by homogeneous finite state Markov processes is considered. We first model the dynamics of the production system that have machines that fail at random times and stay down for random lengths of time. We also consider the machine repair and preventive maintenance policy. We start from the hedging point method for scheduling and find optimal production rate and preventive maintenance rate of the machines so as to minimize the total inventory, backlog and maintenance cost.
