This study was performed to investigate the clinical features of headache, relations with tissue tenderness and contributing factors for outbreak of headache in the patients with temporomandibular disorders. For this study, 80 patients with temporomandibular disorders were selected from the patients who presented to Wonkwang university dental hospital. The author carried out routine clinical examination and investigated the features of headache related to pain site and frequency and measured scores of tenderness in masticatory system and craniocervical region designed by the author. If the subjects had more than one pain site in the head and neck, the author named as primary pain, secondary pain and tertiary pain site according to patient complaint.
The data collected were analysed by SPSS Windowsⓡ(Version 7.5) programs and the results of this study were as follows:
1. There was significant correlationship between frequency of headache and neck pain and scores of tenderness of head and neck muscles. The order of the primary pain site according to pain intensity was temporal, posterior cervical, and suboccipital region with descending order, but the order of the secondary pain site was posterior cervical and suboccipital region. Sternocleidomastoid muscle commonly showed the highest scores of tenderness in primary and secondary pain site.
2. Presence or absence of subjective temporomandibular joints pain did not influence on the frequency of headache and neck pain, and total scores of tenderness of muscles, whereas posterior extension of head showed increase of headache and neck pain. Joint sound in the subjects with pain showed tendency of longer duration than without pain.
3. Presence or absence of parafunctional habits, painful functional movements, and occlusal and skeletal discrepancy did not affect the in features of headache and neck pain.
