From 57 B.C. to 668 A.D., Korea was divided into the Three Kingdoms of Sin-ra, in the South-east, Paek-je, in the South-west, and Ko-gu-ryeo, in the North. During the early part of this period Chinese culture began to be introduced into the peninsula, including elements such as Buddhism and which had been previously introduced into China from india. Most significant from the point of view of biology was the introduction of chinese and indian medical practices. When Korean priests carried Buddhism and Chinese learning to Japan, they also propagated this medical knowledge.
As is generally true today arable land was scanty and unproductive in the north and relatively fertile in the south, the climate also favoring the south. Paek-je raised corn of high quality, practiced advanced sericulture, mulberry-growing, and weaving. And artificially bred chestnut and long-tailed cocks. The gardens of the royal palaces of Paek-je contained many varieties of flowers and birds, some of foreign origin. The effective improvement of crops and stock indicates that the people of the Three Kingdoms period possessed a practical grasp of the principles of breeding,i.e., the laws of heredity, while in their dyeing and brewing industries we see the early stages of biochemistry.
