An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the behavior of high-strength concrete columns subjected to moment, shear and axial load. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the ACI 318-89 Code for transverse reinforcement to those columns and to propose a new detail considering workmanship. The test specimens were designed to simulate that segment of a reinforced concrete column located between inflection points above and below a story level in multistory frame when subjected to the action of a constant magnitude axial load and time varying lateral displacements due to wind and earthquake load, Eight 1/3 scaled columns were made of high-strength concrete with the design strength of 400kg/cm2. The experimental program was conducted on columns with the cross section 20cmx20cm and the shear span ratio 5. The test parameters of specimens were the axial load ratios(=0.2f'c Ag,0.5'c.Ag), the configurations and the amount of transverse steels. The test results indicated that axial load can significantl affect and alter the behavior of critical regions and members under inelastic cyclic loading. Strength, stiffness, and deformation capacity of plastic hinge zone were deteriorated with increasing axial load. The quantity of transverse steels recommended by ACI 318-89 provisions was found to be unconservative at high axial load ratio (0.5f'c. Ag).
