In equivalent static analysis, the fundamental period of
structure is one of the most important parameters in determing
the minimum base shear for earthquake design. The periods of
rigid frame may be approximated from simple but crude code
formula which does not take into account any of the geometric
or material properties of a frame except its total height.
The eigenvalue analysis can be used to justify periods from
code formula, but many engineers hesitate to use eigenvalue
analysis because of its complicated and time-consuming
procedures. In this study, the rapid and relatively accurate
hand method of estimating fundamental periods of rigid frame
is proposed in the form of simple algebraic equations.
