The purpose of this thesis is to review the issues of
monumentality in modern architecture. The expression of
monumentality in architecture had been a central task
since mankind began to build for the first time. But
modern architects regarded it as a sort of prohibited
issue because of their moral attitude. As a result, there
was hardly any example not only in real building but in
paper architecture at its early stage. In 1930s,when
modern, movement began to reach its maturity,the issue of
monumentality became to be an imperative one. The need for
monumentality which was strongly stated by S.Giedion brought
about a series of international debates in late 1940s.
Consequently there was a certain agreement on the definition
of mounmentality and the appropriateness of monumental
expression. It has some significance. Firstly, it provided a
starting point for the debate on the accomplishment of
monumentality.
Secondly,it had an influence on the emergence of the so-
called post-Modernism.
