Contemporary museums shows an extraordinary diversity, which however can be understood as
several kinds of fundamental types in terms of the composition of their exhibition spaces. This study
aims to understand the present trends of schemes in museum spaces and to establish the
concrete directions in designing museum. The analysis identifies three fundamental museum types
with historical context; respectively `intermittent', `integrated'and `continuous'exhibition spaces. In
these types, the continuous exhibition space has appeared in the middle of the 20th century with
public demands. They have in common definite circulations and spatially continuous connections
between each exhbition room. In order to comprehend its characeristics, three museums, High
Museum of Art, L'Historial de la Grande Guerre and Kunsthal, have been analyesed. As a result, it is
ascertained that they have the inclination for external expression of the continuous exhibition
spaces. This is the important charateristic of the present museum architecture in that it suggest
various formal possibilities.
