A more proper understanding on the design process should be made in order to improve design education and to enable the development of intelligent CAD systems. A protocol analysis method is proposed as a tool to investgate into the process, which is a technique devised to infer the cognitive mechanism of the problem-solver. A protocol is the recorded behaviour of the problem-solver. And the advantage of the protocol analysis it goes beyond what designers could explicitly tell you in a problem-solving situation and it might be infer how and what knowledge they are applying. The architectural design is seen as a type of problem-solving requiring highly intelligent mental activities. A protocol method is particularly useful for understanding design process and eliciting design strategies and knowledges that designers use in problem -solving like the architectural design. In this paper it is argued that its application to the architectural design process is feasible and useful.
